Vibration Monitoring for Compressors

Vibration Monitoring for Compressors

Compressors are production-critical assets where mechanical condition, process conditions and machine type all influence vibration. Monitoring should match the compressor technology and relevant failure modes.

Rotating compressors

Monitor bearings, shafts, couplings, gears and drivers for imbalance, alignment and bearing-related changes.

Reciprocating compressors

Vibration is useful for selected components, while dedicated measurements may be needed for rod-drop and other reciprocating-specific mechanisms.

Auxiliaries

Oil pumps, cooling fans, motors and other balance-of-plant equipment are strong candidates for continuous monitoring.

Measurement strategy

For reciprocating compressor rider-band and rod-position monitoring, use a dedicated solution such as Istec RecipSys where appropriate rather than treating VibSys as a substitute.

Scalable monitoring with Istec VibSys

Istec VibSys A01 provides four vibration channels for distributed machine-condition monitoring. Units can be installed close to selected assets and expanded as monitoring coverage grows.

VibSys works with compatible 2-wire IEPE accelerometers and is not restricted to Istec-branded sensors. Sensor selection should match the speed range, expected vibration frequencies, temperature, environment and mounting arrangement.

VibSys supports condition monitoring, trending and diagnostics. Safety-critical protection, shutdown and trip functions should use the appropriate dedicated protection architecture.
